Pathology is a branch of science where the causes and mechanisms of diseases are investigated, and diseased tissues, organs, and body fluids are examined at macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular levels.
A Medical Pathologist, who conducts pathological examination and evaluation, is a medical doctor specialized in this field.
Medical pathologists evaluate various types of specimens, including small biopsy materials obtained from patients in the outpatient clinic, as well as organ and tissue samples of various sizes obtained from patients in the operating room. They perform macroscopic evaluations and microscopic examinations of cytology samples (body fluids, smears, fine needle aspiration materials, and cervicovaginal smear samples). They make diagnoses related to existing diseases and/or lesions and play a role in determining prognostic and predictive criteria that guide treatment, particularly in patients diagnosed with cancer. Therefore, pathological diagnosis is the gold standard in diagnosing cancer.
During the pathological examination process, additional methods such as immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, and molecular techniques are applied, in addition to macroscopic and microscopic examinations, cytological material examination, and traditional histochemical staining, to determine diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive criteria essential for targeted treatment plans.
Intraoperative consultation (frozen section) is an urgent pathological examination method during surgery to determine the course of action.

Academic Activities in Our Medical Pathology Department
In addition to our hospital's activities in diagnosing diseases, our Medical Pathology department conducts experimental, clinical, and clinicopathological research projects to contribute to medical advancements.
Our Medical Pathology faculty regularly participates in multidisciplinary oncology tumor board meetings (such as breast, gynecologic oncology, endocrine, genitourinary, and general tumor board meetings), where patients are regularly evaluated.
Our faculty members closely follow scientific developments and collaborate with professional associations to organize local, national, or international scientific meetings to ensure continued education for colleagues after graduation.
They also contribute to teaching Turkish-English Medical Pathology courses for medical students in the second and third years of the Medical Faculty and Medical Pathology courses for first-year students of the Pharmacy Faculty in Ankara.
