The Rheumatology Department deals with the treatment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases that develop as a result of the improper functioning of the immune system. If these diseases are not treated, they can cause loss of workforce and disability. In inflammatory rheumatic diseases, not only the joints may be affected. Involvement of organs such as the heart, lungs, vessels, kidneys, nervous system, eyes, hair, and skin can also be seen.
Rheumatism is not a single disease, and nearly 200 diseases fall under this classification. For the most appropriate treatment of rheumatic diseases, it is necessary to diagnose the disease correctly and early. Early diagnosis and treatment in rheumatic diseases can prevent future disability and loss of function. Rheumatic diseases are chronic illnesses. Treatment is long-term and regular doctor monitoring is important.
In the Rheumatology Science Branch; patients are evaluated as a whole from an internal perspective, and the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as spondyloarthropathy (inflammatory spinal rheumatism), rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue diseases (such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, scleroderma), gout, vasculitis (diseases causing vessel inflammation), familial Mediterranean fever, Behçet's disease, as well as non-inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), osteoporosis (bone loss), and fibromyalgia are carried out.
The Rheumatology Science Branch was established for the first time in our country in the late 1970s. It was founded in Ankara by Prof. Dr. A. Eftal YÜCEL within our university in 1996, and started sub-specialty training in 1998.
